THE WHITE BOX

FROM THE EDITING ROOM
The White Box was the biggest turnover of footage I've ever received, and the most involved I've been in producing a film.
The Director knew he had something here, but it wasn't clear what; the shooting process was often improvisational. To make sense of it, I watched the footage (all 18 hours) in hopes of finding that. What I found was jarring; a story of a painter coming apart at the seams as he grappled with years of emotional baggage, all while producing surreal art in a striking white environment. The bones of a good documentary were there, but an important element was missing.
I went ahead and personally conducted interviews on-camera with every member of the filming crew, getting their candid thoughts on the painter and the events they'd witnessed. From those, I was able to shape a narrative that remained coherent, while finding a relatable angle on the death and rebirth of an artist's spirit.
The result is one of my proudest works.
