LOOK UP

FROM THE EDITING ROOM
It's amazing how a project can change in the editing room.

When I started on the edit of Look Up, the question of runtime was open-ended. The brief called for a cut lasting anywhere between 5-15 minutes. That's a lot of flexibility to tell a story, and presented one of the great joys of editing unscripted films: discovering and crafting an emergent narrative.
As I started cutting scenes, a doc about bouldering became an exploration of wellness, courage, and the search for purpose. More sequences were dedicated to the emotional journey of the subject, while the physical journey became a compelling connective tissue to steer the narrative forward.
The result was a rounded portrait of a brave woman's road to recovery, with heart, humour, and humanity keeping the torch lit through darker beats, and enough beautiful shots of athleticism to sate a fitness fanatic.
